The 2nd Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) were held in Bali, Indonesia from 21-24 November 2007.
The theme of the conference was “Efficient Preventive Measures in the Fight against Corruption. The conference objectives were; • To formulate a development plan for IAACA on the basis of a comprehensive discussion focused on best practices in preventive measures in the fight against corruption. • To promote the effective implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) so as to facilitate international cooperation against corruption. • To formulate further development plans on best practices and preventive measures. The conference was attended by more than 800 delegates from anti-corruption authorities in 89 Member States of the United Nations and 11 International Organisations. SAHRIT had the opportunity to participate at the conference and was the only southern African NGO participating at the conference. SAHRIT’s attendance was also necessitated by the fact that SAHRIT is the African region coordinator for IAACA , tasked with coordinating all the anti-corruption authorities into the IACCA activities. It is through this collaboration that some of the members of the Southern African Forum Against Corruption (SAFAC) for which SAHRIT serves as secretariat, were able to participate at the conference. H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of the Republic of Indonesia was the Guest of Honor at the official opening ceremony. He emphasized the importance of fighting corruption at national, regional and international levels. He re-iterated that IAACA was an excellent mechanism that assists authorities in establishing an effective networking and an opportunity to develop cooperation. He also reassured delegates that Indonesia was committed to fighting corruption at an international level and fulfilling its obligations under the United Nations Convention Against Corruption. He also encouraged member states to come up with strategies and best practices that would enable anti-corruption officials to facilitate the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). The conference was designed to coordinate cooperation from all national anti-corruption authorities, practitioners and other relevant stakeholders working in the area of anti corruption so as to design practical strategies and measures which would assist in the implementation of UNCAC.
