Regional Course on Civil and Political Rights Print E-mail
SAHRIT held a regional short course on civil and political rights in Pretoria between the 20th of August and the 7th of September 2007.

The three week course was attended by a total of 24 participants from 13 SADC countries as well as from Kenya and Ethiopia. The 24 participants included a journalist, a media lecturer, an immigration official, a magistrate, human rights NGO workers, government employees, and an anti-corruption institution employee.

The course was facilitated by experts with different areas of expertise giving the participants varied and important perspectives on civil and political rights. Resource persons included human rights experts and academics from the Africa Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the UNHCR, IOM, Universities, Civil Society Organisation involved in lobbying and advocacy, Media Consultants, Media Houses, National Human Rights Institutions, Diplomatic Missions, and internal SAHRIT staff. The participants particularly benefited from the experiences of a current and a former Commissioner of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, who were able to discuss their individual experiences with the participants.

In order to balance theoretical human rights learning with real life human rights challenges, study visits were carried out to museums (Apartheid museum in Johannesburg and the Hector Petersen 16th June Memorial in Soweto), prisons (Pretoria Central Prison) and media houses (Mail and Guardian), where participants were able to first hand experience the varied facets of civil and political rights .
